Some social media accounts need a little extra push to put themselves on the map. Some are already established and want to give back to their followers. Some just want something fun to spice up their account.

Whatever the reason is, adding a giveaway into your social media plan can be very beneficial to both the account and the organization or person it represents.

A survey conducted in June of 2022 found that 55.28% of brands are running or have run giveaways and contests on their social media platforms, mainly Instagram and Facebook. This study also found that the main reason for doing these was widely to boost brand awareness and increase following on the accounts.

Increasing the following on an account is not the only benefit an organization can see from running a giveaway. Some of the most notable benefits include:

  1. Building a community
  2. Increasing awareness of the brand or person
  3. Increase sales of a product or service
  4. Increase engagement on the account

Building a community involves people coming back to the page and the organization time and time again. Once a giveaway is promoted, it is a great way to get people to the page, then the organic social content after the contest can hook them in.

Along with incentivizing the account’s current following to enter the giveaway and boost engagement of the posts, giveaways and contests also incentivize people who do not follow the account to go to their page and follow along. It gives people a reason to follow, and who doesn’t like an easy opportunity to get something for basically free?

When running a social media contest, the most important things to consider are the audiences you are trying to reach and the allotted budget for the project. Think: what would my audience enjoy receiving? What activity or product would motivate them to follow me and enter into this contest? Without knowing the audience and what would trigger them into participating, the giveaway may fall short.

Budget is also important to consider because there needs to be organic follow up on the platforms to keep the people who followed on the account. Not all of the monthly social budget can be spent on the one contest, it needs to continue going.
